An El Sobrante resident has outraged neighbors who realized he had created a large swastika in his front yard.

Neighbors first noticed the Nazi symbol earlier this week. Vince Poehnelt, who has lived on the block since 1967, said that as a person of German descent, he's offended and considers it to be shameful.

Homeowner Steve Johnson denied that he's constructed a swastika, telling KPIX 5 it is a Tibetan symbol. He said he installed the imagery so he wouldn't have to pull out weeds. He later later told reporters he was tired of being grilled about the sign, and ordered them off of his property.

Under the First Amendment, Americans can display the swastika and other controversial symbols, although in Germany, the Nazi Party symbol has been banned.
