Lucian Miu, 21, was visiting Yosemite National Park from Romania on Wednesday, July 31, when he slipped on a boulder at the base of Bridalveil Fall. He fell 20 feet and died from his injuries.
"Bridalveil Fall in Yosemite is one of the most iconic sights in the world," KCBS and Chronicle Outdoors Editor Tom Stienstra said. "One of the approaches as you drive into the Valley, that's the waterfall you see. That incredible free fall on the right side of the Valley."
The hike to a viewing platform below Bridalveil Fall is not difficult, but often people climb onto to the boulders at the base of the Fall, as Miu did.
"A lot of times, the boulders are much bigger than they might appear," Stienstra said.
There have been a series of recent falls in the national park.
Another person slipped on a boulder at Bridalveil Fall on July 29. That person was injured but survived. On August 1, another visitor to the park slipped off a boulder at Lower Yosemite Fall and was hurt.
There are signs that advise visitors to stay on the park's trails.
"In Yosemite National Park, the rangers have gone overboard putting signs up to stay off of these dangerous areas," Stienstra said. "People just ignore the signs."
Yosemite officials took to Instagram over the weekend to report the recent falls and advise people that the boulders at the base of the park's waterfalls are extremely slippery and can be dangerous.
