Traffic officials in San Jose are hoping one simple change to traffic signals at major intersections will ease congestion at major intersections.
At the intersection of Fourth and Taylor, drivers will now encounter a flashing yellow arrow in addition to the other standard color changes.
"It's just reminding drivers to do what they should already be doing and that's yield to oncoming cars and pedestrians," said Colin Heyne, of the city's transportation department. "In general we're making a move from words…towards symbols," such as the blinking yellow.
But drivers may have a hard time adjusting.
"It's kind of confusing," said one woman in a nearby gas station. "You don't know whether to go through the light, stop or yield,"
