KCBS Radio was named a finalist for the prestigious Marconi Radio Award for "Legendary Station of the Year" by the National Association of Broadcasters on July 19.

“What a tremendous honor to be named a finalist,” said Gregory Nemitz, senior vice president for Entercom, KCBS Radio's parent company. “KCBS has distinguished itself as a world class news radio station – powered by some of the very best broadcasters in the business. We take great pride in the role we play in the community and our industry.”

KCBS Radio launched an all-news format in 1968, providing Bay Area listeners with round-the-clock coverage of local and national news, interviews and features. The station's history extends back even further to the earliest days of radio. In 1909, Charles Herrold started transmissions in San Jose from the College of Engineering and Wireless. Those regularly scheduled broadcasts — the first in the United States — led to the creation of station KQW, which became known as KCBS in 1949.

Programming has evolved through the decades to keep pace with the changing times. In recent years, KCBS Radio has created podcasts and video reports to pair with the news coverage that listeners turn to in record numbers.

The award, named for inventor Guglielmo Marconi, is given annually. The winner will be announced on September 26 at the Marconi Radio Awards ceremony in Dallas.
