A sanitation truck overturned and spilled sewage across Highway 101 in Mountain View on Wednesday afternoon, causing aggravation for drivers that lasted hours.

At the most severe point, three lanes of traffic near San Antonio Road were shut in both the northbound and southbound directions, causing traffic to back up.

"It might be very stinky in this area," the California Highway Patrol tweeted.

Officials later said that only a small portion of the 1,000 gallons of human waste hit the roadway.

The truck had flipped on the southbound side of the highway and was left straddling the median shortly before 1 p.m.
