SUNNYVALE — Sunnyvale police said that they've determined that a driver who injured eight people in a collision on Tuesday night did so intentionally.
"We know now that the accident involved an intentional act by the driver, 34-year-old Isaiah Peoples, who is now under arrest," said Jim Choi, chief of the city's Department of Public Safety, on Wednesday.
Police recommend eight counts of attempted murder charges against Peoples for deliberately gunning a black Toyota Corolla onto a sidewalk and into people gathered near El Camino Real and Sunnyvale-Saratoga Road.
Authorities did not describe what motivated Peoples or label it an act of domestic terrorism.
The Associated Press reported that Peoples' mother said her son is a "model citizen" and Army veteran of the Iraq War who suffered from post-traumatic stress disorder.
The youngest victim is a nine-year-old and was not seriously injured.
