An Oakland police officer was in stable condition after being stabbed in the neck in an unprovoked attack shortly after finishing his shift on Thursday, according to department officials.
The officer was not wearing his uniform when a woman cut him with a knife as he walked in the Old Oakland section toward his car at 5:30 p.m., police spokeswoman Johnna Watson said.
A passing Waste Management employee saw the attack on Sixth and Jefferson streets and called 911.
A suspect has been arrested, Watson said, the officer underwent surgery at Highland Hospital. Police said that they found a knife.
Because the unnamed officer was dressed in civilian clothing, it's unclear if the attacker knew that she'd stabbed a cop, Watson said.
