BERKELEY (KCBS RADIO) – The teaser trailer for director Christopher Nolan's upcoming latest film, "Oppenheimer," dropped on Thursday.

The highly-anticipated film is about the life of American scientist Julius Robert Oppenheimer, and how he went on to play a critical role in the development of the atomic bomb with the Manhattan Project.

Oppenheimer taught physics at UC Berkeley for years between 1929 and 1943, and as such, scenes of the movie were filmed at the school’s campus this spring, according to reporting by Bay City News.

As well as teaching and acting as the director of the Los Alamos atomic laboratory, Oppenheimer was the leader of a secret group of physicists on campus called the "luminaries" who lent their skills to the U.S. government during World War II to help create the first atomic bomb, the outlet reported.

They met on campus at two main locations: offices 433 and 435, on the top floor of what is now Physics South, and this is where Nolan filmed scenes for the movie.

Other filming sites included Oppenheimer's offices – now occupied by physics cosmology professor William Holzapfel – Oppenheimer Way outside Physics South, and the path on the west side of the Campanile clock tower, the outlet reported.

The movie stars Cillian Murphy of "Peaky Blinders" fame as Oppenheimer and boasts a star-studded cast, including Robert Downey Jr. and Florence Pugh. Filming wrapped up on May 20.

The teaser trailer doesn't appear to show any of the Berkeley scenes, but instead focuses on black and white shots of Murphy as Oppenheimer, putting on a hat, staring out a window at a barren landscape and walking down a crowded hall.

Interspersed are clips of embers sparking, undulating closeups of the sun, and other fiery imagery and audio of what sounds like a train gaining speed on tracks.

A countdown emphasizes the tension and drama of the film, ticking down throughout the trailer to the date when the film will finally hit theaters July 21, 2023.
