The Atlantic City Police Department announced on Tuesday night that Gore had been charged with simple assault stemming from a domestic violence dispute at a hotel last month. Police said "complaints were not filed at the time," but the "ensuing investigation resulted in" the 39-year-old facing charges.

Police responded to a report of a domestic violence dispute at the city's Tropicana hotel 8:11 a.m. on July 31.

The woman, who remains unidentified, was speaking with hotel security as police arrived. She "did not exhibit signs of injury" at the time, according to police.

Gore is scheduled to appear in a New Jersey court in mid-October, according to court records that TMZ Sports obtained.

Gore, 39, is third on the NFL's all-time rushing list and played 16 years with the 49ers, Indianapolis Colts, Miami Dolphins, Buffalo Bills and New York Jets. He officially retired from football this June, signing a one-day contract with San Francisco to retire as a member of the team that first drafted him in 2005.

The 49ers said at the time that Gore would be inducted into the team's hall of fame and honored at a game this upcoming season. The team didn't say when the induction would occur, and it's unclear when the ceremony will happen in light of Tuesday's announcement. The 49ers didn't respond to a request for comment on Wednesday night.
