In his first memo to Twitter staff, Elon Musk said employees must return to the office for at least 40 hours a week.
He’s also ending free food for employees when they are at the office.
This applies to everyone, unless they have a specific exemption. It's a sharp reversal for Twitter, one of the first tech companies to embrace fully remote work.
"I think it's time for everybody to come back to work," said Ian McKinley, who works at the market in the Twitter building in downtown San Francisco. "Working in a home is great, but we're all here, we're all ready to get back to it."
According to former San Francisco Mayor Willie Brown, returning to the office will be good for other struggling businesses trying to stay afloat since the pandemic first forced people to stay home.
"And if they do, that little store down there at the corner where they used to do their buying will be able to bring his people back to work," said Brown. "It's all connected."
Meanwhile, Musk also warned Twitter employees to brace for difficult times ahead. He reportedly warned that a Twitter bankruptcy is also possible, which is one of his reasons for bringing people back to the office.
Several major companies have recently pulled back on advertising on Twitter, waiting to see how Musk's takeover impacts content moderation.
