SAN FRANCISCO (KCBS RADIO) – Should he stay or should he go? That's the question that Elon Musk asked Twitter users – whether the polarizing owner should step down as CEO of the company.

The Twitter poll closed overnight on Sunday, and in the end more than half of the 17.5 million users who responded voted yes, that Elon Musk should step down as head of Twitter.
The new CEO of the social media platform has incurred controversy since his takeover in recent weeks, such as banning some journalists from Twitter only to then reinstate them, laying off half of Twitter's employees, and gutting content moderation.
Although he wrote in his tweet along with the poll that he would abide by the results, there has been no immediate announcement from Twitter or Musk, although he did write after the poll closed, "As the saying goes, be careful what you wish, as you might get it."
But even if he does step down, it's unclear how much authority he would really relinquish.
"It's important to remember though, who he ends up picking as the new CEO, that person is still going to be reporting to him," said CNET Editor at Large Ian Sherr says. "He's still the owner of Twitter, the buck will stop with him."
The results of the poll came in with 57% of Twitter users voting yes, 42% voting no.
