Wednesday morning fire burns Redwood City record store

Fire crews in Redwood City contained a fire that burned a popular local record store early Wednesday morning.

The one-alarm fire was first reported at The Record Man on El Camino Real at 3:45 a.m. The fire was extinguished by 6 a.m.

Gary Saxon, who has owned The Record Man for 33 years arrived around 4 a.m. to watch his business up in flames. "The most significant loss is a rare collection of 16-inch transcription records," he said.

The building suffered a great amount of damage on its exterior.

An investigation is underway to determine the cause of the fire, which originated from a planter box. "It’s considered an original Redwood City store," said customer Thomas Aubert. "It has an awesome collection of old school records."

There were no reports of injuries in the Wednesday morning fire.

A person of interest is now under investigation for starting several early morning fires, including one last week at a Redwood City church.

"The Record Man" has been in business since 1988 and boasts more than 1 million pieces of vinyl.
