One person was killed in a two-story house fire in East Oakland early Tuesday.

Firefighters were on scene at the fire in the 3400 block of Pierson St. at about 5:18 a.m., Oakland Fire Battalion Chief Chris Landry told KPIX.

The location isn't far from Mills College.

Crews arrived to find flames and smoke coming out of the house, which was reportedly thought to be vacant as it was condemned. The fire spread to the home's attic before it was contained shortly before 6:30 a.m.

A woman's body was found inside. Her name and age have not yet been released. Firefighters remained on scene to put out hot spots.

The cause of the fire is under investigation.
