A major illegal fireworks distribution ring was busted by San Mateo County investigators, officials announced on Friday.
Lieutenant Allen of the San Mateo County Sheriff’s Office told KCBS Radio that the bust came after a "several month investigation" where "undercover cops made large quantity purchases" from the purveyors.
On Wednesday and Thursday, detectives issued a number of search warrants in San Mateo, San Francisco, Alameda and Santa Clara. They seized 15,000 pounds of fireworks and approximately $1,000,000 in cash.
The two suspects in the case were identified as 61-year-old San Francisco resident Sam San and 54-year-old Jennifer Nguyen of San Jose. San is currently being held at San Mateo County Jail on charges of selling and possessing dangerous fireworks. Nguyen has not yet been booked.
Officers remind the public that fireworks are illegal to have, sell or use in unincorporated areas of San Mateo County without a permit and will warrant a fine of up to $1,000.
