At around 3:40 a.m., a 911 call was made informing authorities that a Honda SUV was heading in the wrong direction on I-80 near the Carquinez Bridge.
"It was witnessed that the vehicle had been traveling westbound in eastbound lanes and as the call-taker was on the phone with the person reporting it, within a minute, we received a call that there had now been a collision," Officer Andrew Barclay with California Highway Patrol reported.
According to authorities, the Honda hit a Tesla Model 3 head-on, killing the drivers in both cars. They were pronounced dead at the scene.
"It's impossible for us to say if, at this point, if drugs or alcohol were involved, however, that's going to be part of our investigation," Barclay said.
A fire fully engulfing the Honda and Tesla and debris from the collision caused the I-80 to be closed for several hours, disrupting early morning traffic.
A third car, a Toyota Camry, also crashed into the two cars, but the driver survived with minor injuries. The I-80 has since been reopened.
