The single-engine Vans RV-10 personal plane crashed into the Marin Headlands near Slackers Hill at 12:09 p.m., the Marin County Sherriff's Office reported. The aircraft's emergency beacon was activated at about 12:11 p.m. and multiple first responders were dispatched to look for the plane, officers said.
Crews later determined the plane went down on a backcountry ridge north of Conzelman Road, away from roads and hiking trails. First responders located the plane at 2 p.m., the sheriff's office said.
The two people on the plane were found dead.
Marin County Sheriff's Office tweeted that the victims' identities will not be released until Monday.
Officials said neither visitor access nor traffic in the Marin Headlands has been impacted by the crash. Fog is completely obscuring the area – including the Golden Gate Bridge – and the crash site is closed for the investigation.
An interagency team led by the NTSB includes the National Park Service, Marin County, U.S. Coast Guard and FAA. It wasn't immediately clear what circumstances led to the crash. According to the FAA, officials are expected to release the aircraft's registration number once investigators are able to verify it at the scene.
The intersection of McCullough & Conzelman Roads reopened Saturday morning around 10:45, according to a tweet by Golden Gate National Park Service.
KCBS Radio has reached out to both the National Park Service for comment but has not yet heard back.
