Five people were injured in the blaze and eight are looking for a new place to live, but officials warn the two-alarm structure fire could have been much worse.

The fire broke out just after 1 a.m. at the 11 story Avalon Sunset apartments on Locksley Avenue.

Multiple calls to the San Francisco Fire Department reported a fire in a rear apartment spreading quickly.

"Heavy fire and smoke coming from a rear, multi-level unit from this building," described SFFD spokesperson Jonathan Baxter. "Two individuals ultimately jumped from windows for their safety. Those two individuals were transported to local hospitals and will be okay."

The cause is still under investigation, but the department tweeted that a lithium ion battery started the blaze.

Two units in the 244 apartment building suffered moderate to major damage. The Red Cross is helping the eight people who were displaced.
