Four homes burned and one firefighter was injured in an overnight fire in San Francisco’s Noe Valley neighborhood.
The three alarm fire started at about 2 a.m. on 23rd St. near Eureka St. and spread quickly as residents fled to safety.
When firefighters arrived on the scene they faced some issues of their own.
"They were confronted with a lot of fire coming out of the fire building, which was a two-story single family residential building. That fire was expanding or extended to what we call an exposure, the building next to it, on the left side. They started an aggressive fire attack," said San Francisco Fire Lt. Jonathan Baxter. "Very early on in their fire attack, a live wire from the home fell and landed across the engine."
Crews had to abandon the fire engine until PG&E could arrive on scene and cut power.
One firefighter had a minor injury while fighting the blaze, but not by the downed line.
Crews were able to get the fire under control by 3:30 a.m., but not before four homes were burned, including two classic San Francisco Victorians. Two of the homes sustained serious damage.
Six people were displaced by the fire and are being cared for by the Red Cross.
While looking at the damage to his home, one resident told KCBS Radio he was just grateful that he had not been home when the fire broke out.
The cause is still unknown and investigators are on the scene.
