
Fire crews in Berkeley responded to a six-alarm fire that broke out in an apartment building near the UC Berkeley campus Saturday evening.
Fire officials said the blaze erupted around 6 p.m. in the 2000 block of University Ave. at the apartment building that appeared to be under construction. The building is eight or nine stories in total.
Residents in nearby buildings were evacuated.
As of 8:45 p.m., the fire was contained to the one building, but crews remained at the scene to put out hot spots.
Officials asked all people to avoid the area. As of 9 p.m. Saturday, University Ave. was closed between Milvia St. and Shattuck Rd.
There were no reports of injuries. The cause of the fire is unknown.
