SAN FRANCISCO (KCBS RADIO) – A new restaurant in Santa Clara County from renowned chef Traci Des Jardins has suddenly closed its doors only six months after opening.

el Alto, a California-Mexican restaurant in Los Altos, first welcomed customers at State Street Market in March. It was a space where the history of early California-Mexican ranchos was celebrated in a farm-to-table style approach.

Des Jardins has been part of the San Francisco Bay Area food community for over 30 years, operating multiple establishments from Presidio National Park to Oracle Arena — including the much loved Jardinière, which closed in 2018.

The acclaimed chef didn't offer an explanation for el Alto's closing, only that Friday was its last day of service.

"It has been incredible to operate in Los Altos where the interest, excitement, and reception to the restaurant blew me away," Des Jardins said in an Instagram post. "It was a wonderful experience to again work alongside Chef Robert Hurtado, as well as the amazing kitchen and front-of-house staff that worked to bring this concept to life. I loved hearing the feedback from guests as we interacted in the dining room. At the end of the day, I'm incredibly proud and grateful to have been a part of this project."

In a statement to KCSB Radio, Des Jardins' partner Bon Appétit only had positive words for the restaurant. "Bon Appétit Management Company has been honored to collaborate with Traci Des Jardins and Los Altos Community Investments on the el Alto project," the company said.
