Before Sunday night's Game 2 of the NBA Finals between the Warriors and the Celtics, NBA commissioner Adam Silver joined NBC Sports Bay Area for a pregame chat. As part of his discussion, Silver said it's a matter of time before the WNBA establishes a franchise in the Bay Area.
"It would be – and will be, at some point – huge for a WNBA team to have a franchise here." Silver said. "Not only does the Bay Area have some of the best sports fans, but it’s a hotbed for women’s basketball."
The Bay Area definitely has the appetite to support another hoops franchise, especially a women's basketball team. There are also two arenas ready to host a team.
While the Warriors currently play Chase Center in San Francisco, the Oakland Arena is still a possibility as well. Both options are reportedly under consideration, according to The Athletic.
This is exciting news for basketball fans in the Bay Area. There is immense global interest in the Warriors, but they have also led local TV ratings six out of the past seven seasons, including 2021-22.
Stanford coach Tara VanDerveer has also built one of the nation’s premier women's college hoops programs over the past four decades in Palo Alto and is the winningest women’s coach in NCAA DI history.
Warriors superstar Steph Curry will also be thrilled with the news, as he has been a longtime advocate for women’s hoops and recently graduated from Davidson after writing his thesis on advancing gender equity through sports. Curry has also struck up a close relationship with East Bay native and WNBA star Sabrina Ionescu.
The WNBA currently has 12 franchises but is reportedly exploring expansion in other markets. According to The Athletic, the WNBA is also considering Nashville, Philadelphia, Portland and Toronto.
