Ahern was riding an ATV vehicle and was “tossed out of it” while making a turn, landing on asphalt, Kelly said.

He suffered injuries to both his ribs and shoulders .

“He’s banged up, he’s bruised up,” Kelly explained. “That being said, he’s expected to make a full recovery and be back at work . In that regard, he’ll be okay.”

"He's alert and he's awake. I'm talking to him... He's fully functioning, he's resting, he's fine," he added.

As of Thursday, Ahern remained hospitalized after having surgery to repair a broken rib as a result of the crash.

“We’re thankful that he is okay and going to recover, and he’s thankful too that he wasn’t more seriously injured,” Kelly added.

In the interim, Undersheriff Richard Lucia, who has held the position for close to 18 years, will handle Ahern’s day-to-day duties.

“We’re not missing a beat,” Kelly said.

He reiterated that Ahern is expected to be back "shortly."

"He is a very driven man. When some adversity is thrown his way, he’s going to work as hard as he can to get over it," Kelly said. "I’m not worried about him."
