Ahern wrote in a letter posted to the Alameda County Sheriff's Office directed towards staff on Wednesday congratulating "the new Sheriff-elect."

He did not name Sanchez in the letter, but wrote, "I wish this new administration the best of luck. I have been very fortunate to have worked with the finest individuals that have ever been in the law enforcement profession."

Ahern has served as sheriff for 16 years. He wrote that his last day will be on Jan. 3 of next year and will officially retire.

"My administration will work to ensure a smooth transition," he wrote.
