Police in San Jose have arrested two men in connection with a fatal shooting Thursday that left one person dead and happened just a block away from last week's deadly mass shooting at a VTA light rail yard.

43-year-old Eric Zarate and and 34-year-old Michael Herrera were arrested for the shooting which occurred at North San Pedro St. and Hedding St. just before 2 p.m., according to authorities.

Officers noticed an unusual event involving two adult males running down the sidewalk and as they contacted the individuals, one of them collapsed to the ground. Authorities noticed he had a gunshot wound, and after they attempted to give him CPR, pronounced him dead at the scene, according to San Jose Police Spokesperson Christian Camarillo.

"This is not related to any of last week's events," Camarillo said. "There is no public safety issue or threat right now. Completely different, isolated incident than what happened last week."

The victim has been identified by the Santa Clara County medical examiner's office as 20-year-old Malik Johnson.

Authorities are still investigating the motive.

It's the 18th homicide in San Jose this year.

"With our community still reeling from last week's horrific shooting, we are experiencing shock and profound heartbreak once again," State Senator Dave Cortese said in a statement. "This is only another indication that meaningful steps need to be made to strengthen and expand California's laws to prevent this kind of violence and I am committed to taking any action needed to safeguard our community. This can't continue to happen."
