A group of North San Jose residents are protesting a new safe RV parking site recently approved by the city.
The parking lot, located on Vista Montana St., is surrounded by numerous apartment complexes.
Bahrat Ramakrishnan, Homeowner's Association president of a complex which sits behind the lot, told KCBS Radio residents are upset the parking site has been located near their homes and just around the corner from a neighborhood park.
"Kids safety is really important. There are around 2,000 to 3,000 (apartment) units here," Ramakrishnan said. "Kids safety is number one. Even yesterday there are so many kids playing. We don’t know what we are getting into. There’s not even a single phone number if something happens."
Meanwhile, Steve Perez who owns an RV doesn’t understand their frustration. He told KCBS Radio his RV is the only home he has and that it’s tough enough being on the streets without facing opposition from residents.
"They don’t let us park on the streets. They let us stay their three days and they say you gotta roll. Okay, I try to follow that rule but I’m moving all over the place. That’s a big unit and it’s hard to park that," he said while gesturing to his mobile home. "People don’t want to see that in front of their house. But in a parking lot like this, I don’t see how that’s bothering people."
The safe RV parking site will accommodate 20 RVs for nine months at a price tag of $400,000. The city of San Jose will provide security and sanitation.
