One on the scene, officers found Tang suffering from a gunshot wound. He ultimately succumbed to his injuries, and officers concluded he was the victim of a robbery gone wrong. The crime was even featured on the national television show, America's Most Wanted, at one point.

Now after almost three decades, "I can announce that we've made an arrest and justice for Mr. Tang's family is at hand," said San Mateo County Sheriff Carlos Bolanos in an announcement on Thursday. "I hope your family will finally get the justice you deserve and the closure you desire."

The city of San Carlos began working together with the San Mateo County Sheriff’s Office in 2010, and in 2018, the Cold Case Unit revisited Tang's murder. This led to the identification of a person of interest – an Oklahoma woman, 61-year-old Rayna Hoffman-Ramos.

She is currently in custody for in Washington County, Oklahoma, pending extradition to San Mateo County.
