2 people, 2 cats rescued from 2-alarm San Francisco apartment fire

San Francisco firefighters rescued two people in a two-alarm fire on the third floor of an apartment building in Haight Ashbury Monday night.

Fire crews responded to a report of smoke seen at the building at 400 Upper Terrace around 8:40 p.m. on Monday. Upon arrival, flames could be seen emanating from the building.

Police officers arrived soon after to help block off the area to traffic.

At around 9:30 p.m., personnel were able to rescue two people from the building.

Around 10 p.m., the fire was reported contained in a Twitter update from the San Francisco Fire Department, with around 40 to 50 people displaced as a result of the blaze.

Those displaced are reportedly being assisted by the American Red Cross, according to the post.

As of Tuesday, morning, firefighters were still on the scene monitoring the building for potential hotspots. Two cats were located and rescued from the wreckage having suffered smoke inhalation but otherwise unharmed.

One firefighter suffered minor burns. No other injuries have been reported.

The cause of the fire has not yet been made public and the incident is under investigation.
