San Francisco Police have identified Patrick Thompson, 54, of San Francisco as the alleged assailant in a pair of stabbings on Market St. late Tuesday.

The incident happened Tuesday afternoon as the victims, two Asian American women ages 84 and 63, were waiting for a bus. According to a news release, Thompson was booked at the San Francisco County Jail on charges of attempted murder and elder abuse.

He’s not yet been formally charged by the city's District Attorney’s Office.

While the 84-year-old victim initially suffered from life-threatening injuries, she’s since been upgraded to non-life-threatening condition. KGO reported her recovery could be difficult, given that the knife punctured part of her lung and she’s just recovered from a bout with COVID-19.

A GoFundMe set up for the elderly victim has almost reached a $50,000 goal.

"These Asian hate crimes need to stop," the GoFundMe's description said. "Our hearts go out to all those who have been injured, killed, or affected by this wave of racist crimes toward the Asian community. San Francisco is my home and my Grandma’s home. We need to feel safe where we live and not in constant fear."

Both women remain hospitalized.

Investigators are working to determine is the attack was caused by racial bias, police said. The stabbings remain under investigation.
