SAN FRANCISCO (KCBS RADIO) –  The Bay Area Rapid Transit on Tuesday announced the opening of renovated restrooms at two more stations, continuing its effort to restore facilities after an over 20 year closure.

The newest restroom restorations, at the Montgomery Street and Lake Merritt stations, are part of a project, first announced last October, to reopen bathrooms at 10 different platforms which have been shuttered due to safety concerns since the Sept. 11 terror attacks.

The first two renovated restrooms, at Powell Street and 19th Street/Oakland, were unveiled in February. Since the reopening, the restrooms at Powell has averaged 212 people per day and the 19th Street facility averaged 110 users, the agency said in a release.

The Montgomery and Lake Merritt station's updated gender-neutral restrooms feature refreshed tiles, energy-efficient and brighter LED lighting, new hand dryers and an attendant on duty at all hours to greet riders and "discourage unwanted behavior," officials said.

The Montgomery station restrooms are located near the Montgomery/Post/Sutter entrance while Lake Merritt’s are on the concourse near the Customer Services Center.

The agency said it’s taking a "phased approach" to reopening the remaining restrooms based on available funding. The Downtown Berkeley and Embarcadero stations are next in line, set to reopen their restrooms at an undisclosed time "this fiscal year," officials said.

The remaining stations scheduled to have their restrooms reopened after that are 12th Street/Oakland, Civic Center, 16th Street Mission, and 24th Street Mission.
