The transit agency will not be reinstating its long-standing requirement that riders wear face coverings.

BART's current mask mandate was enacted on July 28 and is set to expire on October 1. The transit agency's board of directors on Thursday night agreed to a resolution where mask mandates for BART are only triggered when public health officials require indoor masking in their jurisdictions, according to an agency press release.

Since no such requirement is presently in place in the Bay Area, BART will no longer require masks when the current mandate expires on October 1.

Once the current mandate expires, officials said BART will "strongly encourage" riders to wear masks in their system. Free masks will be available by request at each station.
