Bay Area's air quality expected to worsen throughout the week

While we're staying at home, enjoying a fire in the fireplace is against the law both Monday and Tuesday.

Initially set for just Monday, this winter's first Spare the Air Day has been extended through Tuesday by the Bay Area Air Quality Management District.

"A lot of people grew up having a wood fire burning in your fireplace, but unfortunately it is harmful to our health," said BAAQMD Public Information Officer Erin DeMerritt.

Those fires spew out billions of particles of bad, bad stuff.

"Those tiny particles, you can't see them but they can cause real harm to your body," she said. "It is so important to not burn wood…especially because it is illegal during a Spare The Air Alert."

Air quality is expected to worsen throughout the week.
