SAN FRANCISCO (KCBS RADIO) – Grab your sun hat as you head off to work today, this is expected to be the hottest day of the week, with temperatures rising over 100 in many inland areas.

The National Weather Service issued an excessive heat watch for Tuesday from 11 a.m. to 8 p.m., as the Bay Area braces for sweltering conditions.

Highs are expected between the mid 90s to the low and mid 100s in the interior portions of the North Bay, East Bay and Santa Clara County, as well as San Benito County and interior Monterey County.

Communities surrounding Fresno and Merced counties have an excessive heat warning, while the remainder of the Bay Area, excluding the coast, has a heat advisory.

John Campbell lives in Livermore where the high is expected to be 104 degrees today. "I'll probably just stay inside with the air conditioning," he told KCBS Radio.

National Weather Service Meteorologist Roger Gass told KCBS Radio the high heat is also worrying when it comes to wildfires. "Thankfully we don’t have strong winds with this system, so we're not anticipating a widespread fire danger, but anyone that lives in the Bay Area and looks out towards the hills, it's dry out there, so be one less spark, don't do anything that could create any kind of sparks," he advised.

The possibility of infrastructure damage also looms as the heatwave takes hold. In June, the heat warped a portion of a BART track, causing a partial train derailment between Concord and Pleasant Hill. BART said it is planning to cut speeds in half today if temperatures exceed 100.
