SAN FRANCISCO (KCBS RADIO) – Today is "Bike to Wherever Day" in the Bay Area — a day when commuters of all kinds are asked to consider using pedal power to get where they need to go.

At Caltrans District Headquarters in Oakland near Lake Merritt, cyclists are stopping for coffee, bananas and muffins on their way to — wherever!

Rob Wallace is biking to work today, but it’s not a special occasion. He bikes every day.

“It feels so much better to go to work on a bike and you’re so much more relaxed both there and on the way back,” he told KCBS Radio.

Bike to Wherever Day, previously known as Bike to Work Day, changed its name during the pandemic.

“A lot of people don’t leave their house for work, or they don’t do so every day, so I would imagine that there are fewer commute trips happening compared to before the pandemic,” said Greg Currey, the bicycle branch chief for Caltrans.

Incentives have been added for Bike to Wherever Day, including prizes, tote bags and free food.
