Don't forget your face covering as you head out this week – as of Tuesday morning, the entire Bay Area is under a new indoor mask mandate.

How are the new rules being received at gyms and fitness studios?

At least initially, the mandate has not seemed to keep fitness fanatics away from the 24 Hour Fitness in San Leandro on Floresta Blvd., even if it has meant some adjustments to workout routines.

The gym manager told KCBS radio that anyone not wearing a mask would not be allowed to work out. He put up new signage on the front door which alerted to people that masks are required at all times.

"It’s all about common sense, better to be safe than sorry," Alfredo, a gym member who exercised Tuesday under the new rules, said.

He added that he wore a mask while excercising even before the updated mandate and it actually helped his workouts.

Other gym-goers were resigned to simply follow the rules.

"I mean it’s uncomfortable, you get the sweat on it. I just feel like you got something to worry about," another member named Jacob said. It’s a little irritating sometimes but you got to do it."

How long will the mandate last?

Bay Area health officers said Monday it will likely stay in place until there is a decrease in COVID hospitalization rates, which have risen sharply in recent weeks.
