San Francisco’s Village Project is adapting its annual Kwanzaa celebration to pandemic life, as the celebration goes virtual this year and features performances by local musicians.
The week-long festival celebrated by many African Americans honors a different principle each day of the holiday, Saturday being unity and Sunday self-determination. Vice President-elect Kamala Harris took to Twitter on Saturday to share her own Kwanzaa stories.
"So each day we light a candle when we are celebrating that particular principle," said Adrian Williams, Executive Director of the Village Project. "Then by the end of the seventh day all seven candles will be lit, which will culminate our program with Imani faith."
Williams said this year’s program is unique due to the pandemic.
"It is virtual, and secondly, we have added, because we are celebrating the history of the Blues, we have added a Blues concert each night with Bay Area Blues artists," Williams said.
People can register for the event at the Village Project’s website or at Event Brite. Williams said participants must RSVP to get a ticket, and that tickets can be used to pick up food for the Kwanzaa feast.
Kwanza runs from December 26 through January 1.
