SAN FRANCISCO (AP) — A Northern California county has paid nearly $10 million to settle a lawsuit by a Silicon Valley software engineer who was going through a mental health crisis when a sheriff's deputy shot him.
Samuel Kolb is now paralyzed from the waist down and said Tuesday that Placer County paid him and his family $9.9 million to settle the lawsuit.
It was filed after the deputy shot him on January 14, 2018.
According to the Press Democrat, Kolb and his son had traveled from their home in San Mateo for a ski trip in Lake Tahoe and were staying at a cabin in Carnelian Bay. That's when Kolb woke up before dawn and began pacing around the cabin.
He had a temporal lobe epilepsy episode that left him disoriented and was shot after he grabbed and raised a carving fork.
Placer County officials declined to comment on the settlement.
