Siosisa Vaitohi, 32, of San Mateo, passed away on June 11 after falling out of a tube that was being pulled by a rented pontoon boat and drowning, the Tahoe Daily Tribune reported.

According to the Placer County Sheriff's Office, Vaitohi was not wearing a life vest at the time of his death.

"The family had rented a pontoon boat and wasn’t going very fast when the deceased fell off his tube," Sergeant Mike Powers told the newspaper. "He was a very large man, 5-feet-11 and 395 pounds, and they could not get him back on the boat."

Earlier in June, a Marine Safety Officer with the South Lake Tahoe Police Department told Sacramento news station KCRA that Lake Tahoe is the "third most deadly body of water in the state of California."

An average of six people die on the lake each summer, often due to cold water shock, the officer told the station. All swimmers are advised to wear life vests.

KCBS Radio has reached out to Placer County Sheriff's Office for comment, but has not yet heard back.
