As the crisis in Afghanistan intensifies, several organizations in the Bay Area are working to resettle Afghan refugees.
UC Berkeley's Human Rights Center has partnered with San Jose State as well as the university's own Afghan Student Association to assist in the resettling process.
Alexa Koenig, the center's executive director, told KCBS Radio that they're working hard to not only bring people into the U.S., but also to support them once they arrive.
"Psychological support to also thinking through who are the communities that can be here to help welcome them and ease that transition," she said. "It's going to be a big piece in the next step that we take."
Cainig said the work that they do wouldn't be possible without the help of the community.
For those in the Bay Area looking to do their part, Koenig recommends reaching out to the organization online.
"We are aggregating all of these offers of support, so anything that anyone can provide from translation to housing to any other connections," she told KCBS Radio.
The organization has raised upwards of $179,000 in donations for Afghan families. Their goal is to reach $250,000 by September 15.
