SAN JOSE, Calif. (KCBS RADIO) – The Indoor Football League's new season is kicking into high gear, and this Sunday, the Bay Area Panthers are getting ready to pounce into action with their first game as well.

The Panthers will take on the Arizona Rattlers at the SAP Center in San Jose.

For the Panthers, the last two weeks have been a whirlwind of tryouts, practice, and appearances in Morgan Hill – the team's new home base as of this season after moving from Pleasanton.

It's a move that came at the request of the team's new head coach and general manager, Darren Arbet, who used to live in the area.

"I lived at San Martin when I was a coach for the SaberCats," he said. "It's an area that I like and love – love the people there."

According to Arbet, the players who will be living in Morgan Hill are paid to make regular appearances in the community.

"So, all the guys are going to go out, and whether they talk, or clean up, or mentor, or whatever it might be – show up and sign autographs, put their jersey on, and read to some kids," he said.

For player Justin Rankin, he’s looking forward to forming those strong community ties.

"I'm all for the community," he told KCBS Radio during his tryouts. "I love the kids."

Of course, the team is hoping to win a lot of football games too.
