According to a statement released early Wednesday morning by the Benicia Police Department, officers responded to an alarm call that went off just after 10 p.m. on Tuesday.

When officers arrived on the scene at the 2000 block of Columbus Parkway just a couple of minutes later, they found an unresponsive man.

The man had been working at the business and had suffered a gunshot wound, and despite medical intervention by paramedics, he was pronounced dead on the scene.

Officers were unable to locate the suspect, who had fled the scene before their arrival.

So far in the investigation, police determined that the shooting happened during a suspected robbery.

The identity of the victim has not yet been released.
