BENICIA, Calif. (KCBS RADIO) – Residents of a Solano County city are relying on a temporary water source after their water main was damaged by winter storms.

Conservation efforts are at an all time high to ensure the community continues to have enough water.
In late March, a rain soaked hillside along Interstate 680 collapsed, cracking the water main in Benicia. Now, Lake Herman is being used for water, which has about a 30-day supply.
"We are in a very fortunate situation where the reservoir is full and the timeline for that available source of water is only being extended by residents and businesses alike, being responsive to this request and truly conserving," said Deputy City Manager Sarah Shawky.

Shawky told KCBS Radio that two 12 inch lines are being installed to bypass the cracked water main.
Ramiro Cortez, owner of Venticellos Ristorante Italiano on 1st Street, got an email last week about the emergency. "I'm tasting the water to see if there was any difference — nothing," he said. "So far, we haven't had any customers complain or say something's wrong with the water."

Repairs to the main are estimated to take around a year.
