Nordic House, Berkeley's popular Scandinavian marketplace, will close its doors for good early next year after nearly six decades in business in the East Bay.
The store, which Peter Caroe originally opened in Oakland in 1962, announced on its website that it will permanently close in January.

Nordic House previously announced plans to permanently close in 2019, pending the sale of the building.
Pia Klausen, Caroe's daughter, took over the family business in 2000, moving it to its current Berkeley location. Klausen told Berkeleyside in 2019 that strict American import laws made it difficult for the store to offer imported Scandinavian goods like jams, cheeses, chocolates and pickled items.
Nordic House will still fulfill online orders for Christmas until Dec. 17. The store is open until Christmas from 9:30 a.m. until 5 p.m. on Tuesdays through Saturdays, and 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Sundays.
