Berkeley police arrest teen for bringing BB gun to high school campus

Berkeley police have arrested a teenager for bringing a BB gun to Berkeley High School's campus.

The Berkeley Police Department on Wednesday arrested a 15-year-old boy, who doesn't attend the school, on suspicion of brandishing an imitation firearm and having a weapon on campus. Police said in a press release on Thursday officers mistook the BB gun for a handgun because it had a "steel side and polymer frame" as well as a make, model and serial number.

The BB gun had "all the visible markings of a real handgun," according to police.

Berkeley police responded to a call just before noon on Wednesday reporting there was a fight downtown with Berkeley High School students. "Involved parties" told police that two of the students made threats with a handgun, according to the release.

The school resource officer identified the two students, whom police said ran from officers before they were detained "in the area of Shattuck Avenue and Allston Way." Police then arrested the 15-year-old after finding the BB gun in his backpack.
