The Berkeley Unified School District has approved a plan to allow in-person learning for a limited number of elementary school students facing learning challenges, however, a broader reopening would not begin until the end of the calendar year at the earliest.
The Board of Education voted 5-1 on Wednesday to approve a two-step Phase One in the district’s reopening plan. A vote on Phase Two was delayed, which sets a target date of December 2 to reopen elementary schools. Board members could also decide not to reopen elementary schools until January, after winter break.
The first step of Phase One allows for groups of no larger than eight students and two staff members at some elementary schools. The target start date is October 26. A second step in Phase One would open those groups to a maximum of 14 students and two staff members beginning November 9.
Staff would be tested for COVID-19 and risk mitigation practices would be put in place as part of the approved plan.
Current health orders do not allow for middle and high school students to resume in-person learning.
