BIG SUR, Calif. (KNX) — A small rockslide in Monterey County has led to the closure of Highway 1 Tuesday, between Ragged Point and the Big Sur River Inn.

Heavy rains led to the mess at Cow Cliffs, filling the roadway with rocks both large and small according to Jim Shivers, a spokesperson for Caltrans District 5.

The section of road had previously been closed Sunday, at the request of law enforcement who wished to allow a clear path for Monterey County residents under and evacuation warning to do so safely ahead of the approaching storm, Caltrans said.

The rockslide comes amid a powerful storm expected to dump rain on the state for much of the week, with snow in higher elevation areas, according to the National Weather Service.
