Starting Monday, Big Sur's Bixby Bridge along Highway 1 will close for overnight maintenance for much of the three weeks.
The road is closed from 10 p.m. to 6:30 a.m. beginning Monday, according to Caltrans. It will remain closed during those hours through Thursday, but it will open fully for the weekend starting at 6:30 a.m. on Friday.
The subsequent two weeks of maintenance will also pause to reopen for the weekends starting at the same time on July 23 and July 30.
The road will take at least 30 minutes to reopen for emergency vehicles because of the use of heavy equipment, according to officials.
Caltrans is working with the California Highway Patrol to coordinate traffic control and emergency response during the closures, but there is no detour. Traffic officials will direct drivers to return along Highway 1 in the direction they came in.
Officials will implement electronic and physical signage to inform drivers before they reach the closure.
