With howling winds on the way, the National Weather Service issued a Red Flag Warning for parts of the East and North Bay starting late Tuesday night and lasting until Wednesday afternoon due to critical fire weather conditions.

The warning will be active from 11 p.m. Tuesday to 3 p.m. Wednesday in the interior North Bay Mountains, East Bay Hills, and Diablo Range as dry, gusty offshore winds are expected to blow across the region.

Northward winds could swirl as fast as 55 miles per hour at the highest elevations, peaking early Wednesday morning. The Northeast Napa Mountains is the region under the most threat, the National Weather Service said.

According to CAL FIRE, Red Flag Warnings are posted "to alert fire departments of the onset, or possible onset, of critical weather and dry conditions that could lead to rapid or dramatic increases in wildfire activity." They are issued when extreme fire behavior is expected to occur within 24 hours.
