The California Department of Parks and Recreation announced on Thursday that Brannan Island State Recreation Area is closing until further notice until April 1.

The park, just off Highway 160 and south of Rio Vista in Sacramento County, covers a collection of small islands and marshes in the delta, which include "many wildlife habitats and opportunities for recreation, including boating and swimming," according to the CDPR website.

There are over 140 campsites, and the park boasts "great fishing, including striped bass, sturgeon, catfish, bluegill, perch and bullhead. Franks Tract, a protected wetland marsh, is home to beaver, muskrat, river otter, mink and 76 species of birds," according to the CDPR website.

American Land and Leisure has been operating the park since 2013, and their lease went month-to-month in 2018. Now, the Utah-based company has decided not to renew its lease, according to the department’s press release.

This type of arrangement is not unusual, the state has a handful of other parks that are operated by outside entities, like the Stone Lakes National Wildlife Refuge, which is operated by the County of Sacramento instead of the state department, according to a park's spokesperson, Jorge Moreno.

"Due to the remote location of the state recreation area, there are no resources within State Parks to keep it open," said the department.

"Affected reservation holders will be contacted by the state’s reservation system – ReserveCalifornia.com – via email and provided with a refund," the statement continued. "Reservation cancellations and refunds will be automatic."

The state department put out a call for others to take over the lease, but hasn't received any offers yet, according to Moreno. "State Parks remains committed to reopening the park unit as soon as feasible," he said in an email to KCBS Radio.

American Land and Leisure did not respond to KCBS Radio's request for comment at the time of publication.
