The attempted robbery happened just before 11 a.m. on the 800 block of Trestle Glen Road. A 63-year-old nanny was pushing a 15-month-old baby girl in a stroller when she was approached by two individuals, one of whom had a gun.
The Trestle Glen neighborhood is a quiet residential area of Oakland lined by two story homes, manicured yards and green trees.
"Two individuals, one of which armed with a firearm, approached the victim who was with a 15-month-old child and attempted to take the victim’s belongings," said Oakland police spokesperson Kim Armstead.
The toddler was injured by shrapnel when one of the robbers shot at the sidewalk.
"Oakland has seen a 3% increase in robberies over the same time last year," Armstead said.
The Oakland Police Department has announced the arrests of five suspected robbers, including two juveniles who police believe are connected with at least 10 armed robberies in the past month.
Despite the arrests, Oakland residents are still shaken by the event. "You can't walk down the street, go to the store without being harassed or robbed or just living in fear," one resident told KBCS Radio. "I've lived in this area for 28 years and this is just absolutely outrageous."
She blames the mayor, prosecutors and police for not doing enough to deter crime and provide alternatives for young people at risk.
