Crews have made "good progress" on the River Fire and are expected to have it fully contained late next week, according to CAL FIRE.

The blaze, which broke out Wednesday afternoon, has scorched 2600 acres of Placer and Nevada Counties and was at 30% containment as of Friday morning. CAL FIRE’s approximate date of full containment is August 14.

"Good progress was made throughout (Thursday) night to strengthen control lines and continue defending structures within the interior of the burn," the agency said.

The wildfire destroyed 88 structures, damaged 20 and is currently threatening another 3400. Two civilians and one firefighter have suffered injuries.

Gov. Gavin Newsom on Thursday night declared a state of emergency in Siskiyou, Nevada and Placer Counties due to the River Fire. His office also announced earlier in the day that they were able to secure a Fire Management Assistance Grant (FMAG) from the Federal Emergency Management Agency to support the state’s response to the blaze.
